The Llanfoist Poultry and Game Group does much much more than just ‘talk chicken’. We’ve already had a number of successful and well attended social events including a Hot Pot evening and barbeques as well as trips out.

30th October 2009 – Hotpot feast!

The hotpot social evening was a great success. There were 45 members all armed with their knife, fork, spoon and bib ready to sample the gastronomic delights that everyone had brought. There were Italian dishes, Thai curry, spicy chilli and good old British fare on offer. The desserts were delightful and we all left pleasantly plump, merry and full of friendships.

During the evening we were treated to a slideshow where we voted for and chose the 12 calendar pin ups from members photos. Democracy in action! The biggest ‘ahhhhhhh’ of the night went to a little duck in a bowl of water!  These will be sent to the printers to produce our group calendar to raise funds for the group.

Thank you to all who participated in the food fest and pictorial artistry. It was an evening to remember.

24th July 2010 Summer BBQ!

The poultry group’s BBQ took place in the beautiful setting of John and Lorna McGlyn’s home set on the side of the Blorenge Mountain overlooking the Usk Valley. With Abergavenny in the foreground and the Sugarloaf and Holy Mountain in the distance, an idyllic setting for this annual event.

The hard work and organisation put in by the social committee certainly paid off on the day with 70+ adults and youngsters having a fabulous time and enjoying the festive atmosphere. The Chicken Free Zone that was the bbq area allowed the ‘’Three Amigos’’ Rick, Mike and Wally to don aprons and cook the veggie and bbq meats to perfection; (no upset tums were reported !!) Rick also took the time to school Wally in a master class in how to retrieve burgers and sausages that had got too close to the charcoal embers, courtesy of too much of the amber nectar!!

The food for the bbq proved to be delicious; many people came up for 2nds and even 3rds! The main fare was complemented by the salads, cakes and puddings brought in by the members for all to sample. Exquisite pastries and fabulously decorated cakes and buns were provided. Our ‘young bantams’ also got in on the act and produced highly decorated cakes and cup cakes. They all proved to be very ‘moorish’ which was evident by the state of the tables following the proverbial biblical locusts’ demolition of the sweets !!

The youngsters also had a great time making full use of the resident trampoline, and not forgetting the garden and grounds to run wild in and away from mum and dad!!

Background music was provided by Emlyn. This was excellent and many people commented on the variety of music and how good it was. It also included the Welsh National Anthem; ‘’surprising how many people actually sang along’’ … Val Doonican eat your heart out!

Last but not least, seeing friends and family relaxing and enjoying themselves amongst like minded people on what turned out to be a fabulous day in a beautiful part of Wales.
